Chapter 4,
Next big major holiday of my stay with Grandma Mary Alice would tell you was Christmas. but she was still not in the house she would come in occasionally climb up the trellis and come in the window grandmother didn’t like it and frowned upon it. She said cats belonged outside.
We’re going to call Mary Alice me cuz it’s just easier. one day she came home and grandma wasn’t there it had snowed a lot it was deep and cold and dark outside like it is in the Midwest when we have a blizzard. and she was a little bit concerned but she was cold and wanted to change out of her school clothes so she went upstairs and was changing out of her clothes when she saw this big man with a basket over his shoulder come leaning on the fence.
ME didn’t know what to expect she didn’t know who it was. Just then the person looked up from the fence and their eyes met and it was Grandma. ME I’m down in the kitchen there was Grandma getting out of her Grandad’s heavy coat and she was rubber from her waist up to her neck to keep good warm the basket contained walnuts husk and walnuts Emily didn’t know at that point that winter was Grandma’s fullest season.
The next night maybe we’ll just call her Mary because ME I forget. Mary had big news when she got home Grandma still wasn’t home I mean she came overnight for but she was out again and when she did get home she couldn’t wait to tell her that they’re doing the Nativity and she gets to be jesus’s mom. Grandma said oh are they still doing that she says I was Joseph cuz she was probably the biggest and the tallest girl in her school in those days.
The second night Mary and her grandmother were out all bundled up in a field through a gate and they’re putting Walnut juice not the juice for a walnut per se but Wild on it husk juice no the hole that’s on the outside of the Walnut that’s all. Evidently it covers up the smell of humans if you put it on a trap I didn’t know that did you know that? This is my second reading in I forgot things every now and then I’m older than you.
The haul last night that night was a couple of foxes one Grandma shot in the head. came Christmas Eve and everybody was at the school for the nativity scene I couldn’t use the doll that they had years for year after year after year the head had caved in.
Ina Ray’s little brother played the part of Jesus. Before pageant was to start the nativity. the door opened where’s a bunch of cold air and a young man walked down aisle. I came to stand you my grandma. All those hides that they took from that field in those traps Grandma sold them for a ticket for Joey to come and see his sister that Christmas. Things like that always make me cry I love this author.
Chapter 5,
Valentine’s Day
One of the ladies didn’t have any children didn’t have any daughters I sort of a hoytoity lady I mean to see sometimes had more money than she had since. And as a wealthy too sometimes they have no thought behind their actions. she had come to Grandma on purpose to ask to borrow Mary. she wanted her to come as guest to the daughters of the revolution the American revolution DAR. Natural she got that out she said and of course we would love for you to make the cherry tarts your pies are so wonderful at Halloween at the party. I’ll have to come back cuz I read in the dark while I was watching Bones with my sister who I love dearly and Arizona and I don’t know exactly how they found or got the cherries I’ll come back to that.
At the party for the DAR Grandma Dowel introduced Weidenbach to her long lost sister who was grandma’s best friend.
